Conducting Interviews

Use a Tripod

Shoot interviews with a tripod for stability.

Positioning

Subject should be on one side of frame: left or right. Middle only when directly addressing audience.

Aspect Ratio

Keep the 4:3 frame in mind while setting up your shot.

Check Sound

Confirm the sound is recording and is clear. Record sample clip first. Wear heaphones when recording.

Interviewer Position

The interviewer should sit just outside the frame at eye level with the lens.

Multiple Interviews

If you have multiple interviews, switch the seating pattern from left to right.

Eye Contact

Eye contact of the guest should be with the interviewer, not the lens.

Take Notes

During the interview, write down powerful quotes and important information.

Put Subject at Ease

Be confident and do not rush to your main point. Help them relax.

Show Interest

Listen to the answers and respond accordingly. Make it feel like a conversation.

Respond to Mood

Smile at jokes and be sympathetic to difficult information.

Maintain Eye Contact

Take brief notes but make sure the interviewee can see your face. Eye contact builds trust.

Ask Open Questions

Avoid yes or no answers. Follow up with why or how to get deeper responses.

Keep Questions Brief

Short questions starting with who, what, why, when, where and how are best.

Learn to Listen

Do not interrupt. Silence at the end sometimes yields the most interesting information.
